In terms of your home’s energy efficiency, the window is always the weak point. Over a year, nearly a third of the sums paid for heating are attributed to poor insulation and the poor quality of the openings. Unfortunately, choosing a window well is often a feat. To help Millennium Windows and Doors give its clients the most energy-efficient windows, skylights, and glass doors.

Energy Efficient Windows and Doors

In construction and renovation, windows represent a major expense. Buying them, therefore, requires thought, time, and investment. We, therefore, surveyed more than 50 window manufacturers available on the world market and reviewed the many parameters that contribute to their performance and the relevance of the investment: design, type of opening, glazing, materials, and costs. All this data, provided by the manufacturers, has been compiled, compared, and accounted for.

Wood, aluminum, fiberglass, PVC… What type of window obtains the best energy performance? Which best meets the ecological criteria? Who among nearly 50 other manufacturers – wins the prize? Aluminum Casement, guillotine, fixed and sliding, glass patio doors … In each category, which windows best meet the criteria of energy and ecological performance? The results, and more, are in our 1st edition of the energy-efficient windows list.

Exclusive to Millennium Windows and Doors

While waiting to consult the prize list, here are eight elements to introduce into your reflection:

First, it’s all in the design . If you can, use windows to the south (at least 60%), in order to optimally recover – and free of charge – the heat from solar radiation. It is ideal, as much for heating as for lighting. In return, minimize openings to the north and west. They have a deficit energy balance.

Controlled by independent bodies, the Millennium Windows and Doors certification guarantees good performance. Windows certified in this way generally rank in the top 15-30% of the most reliable products in their class for thermal conductance and energy efficiency. On the Millennium Windows and Doors label, simply look for the lowest U and the highest RE.

For spacers , prefer plastic rather than aluminum (aluminum has high thermal conductivity and therefore creates a thermal bridge). Between the two, we find those in fiberglass and those in steel. You can also opt for improved spacers, with the addition of insulation, and sometimes the addition of desiccant foam which prevents infiltration.

From a strictly ecological point of view, wooden windows have the best performance in terms of the life cycle. They are also the healthiest. Look for Millennium Windows and Doors certification for truly green windows!

The waterproofing of a window plays an essential role, both in terms of air and water. Airtightness influences thermal and acoustic comfort. Its performance varies between A1, A2 and A3; A3 offering the most sealing. Water tightness varies from B1 to B7; B7 being optimal.

The airtightness of a casement window is optimal compared to other opening methods (excluding fixed windows, of course). Awning windows follow closely behind them, followed by sash and tilt-and-turn windows. The sliding windows close the rear, being less waterproof due to the sliding.

What is Low E film, or low emissivity?

A film of metal oxide that allows sunlight to pass through, but prevents heat from escaping in the form of radiation. Standard glazing has an emissivity of 0.84, which means it radiates 84%. Low E glazing for its part has an emissivity of 0.04. It only lets out 4% of the heat it receives!

Low E Glass Energy Efficient Windows and Doors

On the performance side , double glazing with argon filling and low-emissivity coating is optimal in terms of quality / price. Single glazing really doesn’t insulate enough, and triple glazing reduces light entryways while being much more expensive. The inert gas between the panes acts as an insulator.

Finally, according to Emmanuel Cosgrove, director of Ecohabitation, it’s all about the pose . “ If you buy a product that performs well, but it is incorrectly installed, it is no longer worth anything. Ideally, the window should be placed in the middle of the insulation, which will limit heat loss around the frame. Also make sure that the circumference of the frame is perfectly waterproof. “

Change or renovate its old windows?

For old windows, a change is not always the most advantageous solution. A complete change is necessary if the frame or chassis is broken, the insulation deteriorates, and there is a lot of leakages. Otherwise, it is possible at a lower cost to change the glazing, which is relatively simple and requires few tools. You can also add an additional glass to the existing window, or simply apply a surface film.

Don’t forget the sun visors

As an added bonus, don’t underestimate the importance of sun shades. Trees, shutters, curtains, or awnings are essential for good summer comfort. Hardwoods to the south will prevent the house from turning into a sauna in summer while letting the warm rays through in winter.

Windows, doors, and skylights can cause a significant loss of energy in your home – up to 35%. 100! In the changing climate, this translates into higher energy bills.
