Check Dimensions for Your New Window
Measure Width and the Height of the Frame in Places.
Determine width and height of the pocket opening. Measure inside the present framework instead of involving the stops which hold the sashes set up (you will have to start the lower sash to acquire the dimension ). Assess the height in center, the left and right of this window. Gauge the width at middle, the top and bottom. When ordering your windows use the height and width dimensions.
Do not go any further until you’ve got your windows that are brand new and also have checked the dimensions of them to make sure they will fit.
Remove the Old Window
Windows are constructed differently and have various installation practices. These instructions are based on a standard window installation, yours may vary some. Sometimes it is possible to remove the window and sashes from the inside, but it will be more easier to work from the outside.
Step 1
In case you’ve got a storm window, then remove . Some storm windows may be removed by lifting them. Others may require removing.
Step 2
Score along the border of this storm window frame using a utility knife, then remove the screws and then use a pry bar or putty knife to remove the framework. A paint multi-tool (sometimes known as a 5-in-1 instrument ) can also be useful for this measure.
Step 3
If your present windows are really old, they might have sash weights or springs which you will need to eliminate.
Cut the strings if your window has weights and allow the weight to drop into the framework. If your window has sash springs, then carefully remove them. Raise the sash Close to the window’s top. The springs cut may have covers; remove them if possible. They’ll break off as soon as the springs are removed if you can not eliminate them. Remove the screws holding the springs.
Caution
Sash springs are under pressure and may snap in the window sash track. Be cautious of covers and these springs.
Step 4
Identify any stops on the present window. An older window also has parting stops between the two sashes, inside stops stops holding the sashes set up, and outside stops. If you are installing from the interior, remove the outside stops.
Step 5
Remove the Upper Sash along with the Existing Exterior Stops When Installing a Window from the outside.
Use a utility knife to evaluate where the stops fill the framework. You could have the ability to pry off them. They are embedded inside the framework, if you can not pry off the stops then they have to be cut with an oscillating saw. Be careful of nail places and cut them off.
Step 6
Remove the stop and sash.
Step 7
Sand smooth the surface of the frame and remove any un-even areas. Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Once dry sand once again making a perfectly clean and smooth surface for the new window and sash to fit into.
Install the New Window
Follow these steps to set up the new window.
Step 1
Wash out the opening. If necessary to eliminate all of the debris and dust use a shop vacuum.
Step 2
Apply Flashing sandpaper into the Window Sill.
Employ flashing tape into the sill. It should match the amount of the sill and stretch the vertical leg of the stool (the bottom ledge of the inside side of the window). Make sure you work it in smoothly.
Step 3
Make sure the sills are level and no bowing. If necessary use shims to level up the sills. Secure the shims and cover with flashing tape.
Step 4
Dry match the window to the opening. . After You Set the new window there ought to be a gap around the window frame. Set the window aside for now.
Step 5
Caulk in the stops, the head and the sill around the window opening.
Employ a 3/8-inch bead of silicone caulk in the inside head (the surface of the framework ), along with the sill.
Step 6
Set the window into the opening, then pressing it to the inside until it stops firmly against the caulk. Use shims to fasten the window in place, putting them in the framework screw holes that are pre-drilled.
Step 7
Install Screws In the Holes and Throughout the Shims.
From the interior, insert screws into the holes through the shims.
Step 8
Be certain that the sash sits correctly.
Verify the sashes sit in the framework evenly. If necessary, use extra shims in the assembly rails (the horizontal framework components on the sashes that match when the window has been shut ) to correct the framework of this new window.
Step 9
Check for plumb, square and level and make certain the window works correctly. It’s possible to create any alterations that are additional. Cut the shims when the window operates correctly and is plumb, level and square.
Step 10
Now that the window is in place we need to fill all the gaps and holes with water proof foam insulation, be careful not to over fill. Do not use batt insulation which can absorb water..
Step 11
Measure the height from the base of the window to the sill to dimension the sill adapter.
Step 12
Cut the Sill Adapter to Size.
Use a sharp utility knife to reduce the sill adapter into the proper width.
Step 13
Use a piece of scrap wood to set the sill adapter so you can tap on it in place using a hammer. Drill two holes and lock the adapter in place.
Step 14
Install outside trim around the window frame with finish nails. Seal the edges with caulk. Do not fill the weep holes. Fill any nail holes with wood putty and paint the trim.
Step 15
Apply paint accepting latex caulk around the interior trim.
Once the caulking dries finish the window installation with paint.
